The Genius 52UV from KBA-Metronic installed by Cyclic Digital Print Ltd in England
Cyclic Digital Print Ltd installs KBA-Metronic Genius 52UV to increase versatility and efficiency of B3 printing on paper and plastic substrates

A Genius 52UV went into operation at the beginning of the year at Cyclic Digital Print Ltd in Cumbria, UK. The proprietor-managed company located north of Lancaster (on the southern edge of the Lake District) is in one of the most scenic regions of England, and many of the orders come from the tourism and travel industry.

Cyclic specializes in B3 sheet fed printing. The portfolio includes high-quality brochures, leaflets, posters, folders, labels, point of sale, postcards, price lists, menus and business cards. The company’s ten employees offer a full range of services, from pre-press and printing, right through to finishing. Managing Director Geoff Thould views his investment in a Genius 52UV as an effective advancement of ensuring that the company can continue to offer brilliant UV offset print quality which meets specific customer preferences with short turnaround times.

Crucial advantages

The Genius 52UV was designed to meet the requirement profile of medium-size printing companies like Cyclic which handle short to medium size print runs. Implementing the Genius 52UV has already begun to show its strengths, particularly its user-friendly handling features and wide range of substrates up to 800 micron. Automatic plate change saves time and guarantees high-precision registration. The short inking unit on the Genius 52UV has a lot of advantages when you change colours. You can manage a complete job changeover in about seven minutes. Furthermore the short inking unit offers standardized inking without ink keys, ensuring reproducible, high-quality print.

Thould emphasis that “the process is also completely waterless, which gives strong vibrant colours with no subsequent print finishing problems. It is also important environmentally, given the area we are based in.”

Geoff Thould, is highly satisfied with the Genius 52UV, and remarks that “setup times are very short and startup waste is limited to ten sheets or less. You can produce up to 8,000 sheets an hour in excellent photorealistic quality”. Cost-effective printing on a number of substrates including plastic, lenticular sheet, cardboard, and paper in the popular 36 x 52 cm format, gives innovative designers a variety of options. Given the cost of materials, a reduction in start-up waste and maximum use of the stock during printing helps keep costs down.

Quick drying is the crucial advantage of the Genius 52UV compared to traditional offset printing machines. “The use of UV colors means that the sheets can be transferred immediately to the finishing process. Jobs on impervious substrates that used to take six days (three days for the front side and three for the reverse side) can now be completed in a single day. This has a direct impact on customer satisfaction and customer loyalty”, so Mr. Thould.

He’s overall assessment is very positive. “We ordered the five-color version of the Genius 52UV, so that we can use the fifth print unit for spot colors or varnish. The satellite configuration with a central cylinder handles four-color printing in a single gripper bite without transfer, guaranteeing ideal sheet travel and good color registration. Ghosting or tracking are eliminated, because all cylinders have the same diameter, and you always get a uniform print result.”
