How the offset printing process can be simplified
UV OFFSET PRINTING. Siller GmbH & Co KG offers its customers an extensive portfolio in the production of promotional materials.

The range is supplemented with waterless UV printing technology from KBA-Metronic AG, who is able to simplify the offset printing process.

The company founded in 1980 and based in Schwäbisch Hall has specialised in promotional products made from paper and film, business letterheads, folders and envelopes, labels, mouse pads, greeting cards, calendars and business cards for car dealers, cinema tickets, restaurant cheques and bonus cards.

PRACTICAL REQUIREMENT

"The market for promotional materials is extremely densely populated. In this market you have to stand out as a service provider offering high quality and flexibility at an efficient price-performance ratio", says Edgar Siller, managing director of the company, speaking from experience. "We therefore expect any printing technology we use to have the corresponding features to ensure these high requirements are met."

SOLUTION

The solution preferred by Siller is to expand existing production facilities by using a Genius 52UV. Siller has been working with the Genius 52UV in waterless UV offset printing for the first time and is successfully increasing its existing portfolio of services. "We opted for the Genius 52UV for several reasons. Firstly, we were able to integrate it into our operating premises without any problems in view of the fact that it only required a footprint of 12 m2. Secondly, the technology of the Genius 52UV simplifies the whole offset printing process, enabling our employees to quickly get to grips with operating the machine," continues Edgar Siller.

With a footprint of just 12 m2, the Genius 52UV from KBA-Metronic offers flexibility in its integration and freedom for work (1)

SHORT INKING UNIT

The hub of this printing technology is a keyless inking unit which makes the entire operation easier. The four printing units are arranged in a satellite formation around a central impression cylinder. The identical diameters of the anilox roller, plate inker, plate cylinder and blanket roller allow ghosting-free printing. It is no longer necessary to set the plate inkers. Each sheet is transferred register-true in a gripper bite. The waterless UV inks have a high brilliance and dry immediately, an important consideration if the printed products are to be finished.

JOB CHANGEOVER IN SEVEN MINUTES

Due to the automatic plate insertion and the facility to set the longitudinal and circumferential registers from the control panel, the operator can carry out a job changeover on the Genius 52UV in the region of only seven minutes. This is a noticeable improvement, as print runs are often smaller in creative sectors. The temperature control of the inking unit and plate cylinder ensures "constant printing conditions" according to the manufacturer.«.

The "inner workings" of the extremely compact sheetfed offset printing press includes "intelligent printing technology" which can be operated by just one person (2)

KEEPING A RANGE OF SERVICES SUSTAINAB

For Edgar Siller, the investment in a Genius 52UV is a major step towards maintaining a sustainable range of services: "Innovations are a must in the creative sector. In future, we also want to increase our production of products in the extremely sophisticated area of lenticular printing. A high degree of precision is paramount in thi LEs area. As the lenticular films are relatively expensive, the low start-up waste of the Genius 52UV is another positive feature in this respect. Lenticular printing with its 3D and motion effects opens up completely new possibilities for promotional materials but is still very much a niche market. Here the crucial factor is absolutely perfect registration, which is given with the Genius 52UV thanks to the register-true sheet transfer. The fact that material thicknesses of up to 0.8 mm can be processed is another major advantage of this printing press."

The Genius 52UV is ideal for creative applications such as lenticular films and other non-absorbent materials. It has become synonymous with high colour brilliance and high-precision printing results (3)

COMBINATION WITH SCREEN PRINTING

Combined with the existing screen printing technology, the company believes it is well equipped to be able to respond flexibly to customer requirements. "White boards" (information boards) are produced using screen printing, for example. A hard PVC film is printed white on the back by means of screen printing and an adhesive is applied. These "boards" can be glued to a wall and be removed again at a later date without leaving any residue. Screen printing can apply thick white layers, adhesive and iridescent, scented or metallic inks, for example, as an addition to waterless four-colour offset printing.
