A strong team on an innovative path

PCE GmbH and KBA-Metronic AG worked closely together to successfully design folding box labeling systems for vignettes with additional logging to prevent accounting fraud.

A number of years ago the Italian government, for example, passed measures such as the “Bollini system“ and the labeling of vignettes in order to protect the accounting system of the Italian health service. Now a central database can quickly identify any irregularities thanks to precise reporting by each stage of the trading chain of all the consecutively numbered folding boxes received or issued.

PCE and KBA-Metronic – successful and efficient collaboration
PCE (Pharmacontrol Electronic GmbH) turned to KBA-Metronic AG, one of the leading manufacturers of printing and marking machines and a specialist in field-led holistic solutions, to produce a holistic solution quickly and efficiently. The UDA 150-S from KBA-Metronic has a PCE Bollini-Tracking-System which is specialised for small and middle sized label jobs.

PCE GmbH, which is based in Zwingenberg in Hesse and has roughly 35 employees, has specialized in electronic monitoring systems for pharmaceutical packagings. “Following the use of the new Italian vignettes (Bollinos) on folding boxes by pharmaceutical manufacturers, the process is now being taken further. Having deployed the working group to prepare phase 2 of the Bollini “road map”, it is anticipated that pharmaceutical manufacturers will be called upon in the foreseeable future to issue pack-specific shipping documents and also transmit the relevant data to Rome electronically”, explains Dirk R.H. Dickfeld of PCE GmbH, Zwingenberg.

New production technology ensures absolute security
PCE implemented a solution based on the UDA 150-S separation system which meets all current security requirements. The outstanding feature of the UDA 150-S system is the optimum price-performance ratio, particularly for small to medium-sized labeling jobs for which the set-up of a cartoning unit is not worthwhile, or for manual packing in general. This removes the need to install vignette labeling units on several packaging lines.

The material blanks are transported from pile to pile; constant replenishment during operation is possible. Delivery in exactly the right position during the passage is ensured. The labeled folding boxes are checked by a smart camera system and archived and logged by means of the integrated database system. The intelligent smart camera system is designed for fast and reliable reading of plain writing and special characters and for checking Data Matrix Code, pharmacodes, Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5 Code and additional markings.

The camera can be used in combination with other PCE code readers as these can be integrated and managed by means of the camera control. At the end of the process, the vignette is of course checked and the labels used are logged. A PCE vignette tracking computer can be incorporated as an option; this records each individual number and forwards them to the next entities in the chain by means of a data record (compliant with Italian guidelines), but can also be used to affix and record Belgian and French vignettes. The following can be incorporated as further options: doubles control for cartons, or various marking systems from KBA-Metronic such as laser or inkjet printers for imprinting variable data or additional codes.
