Media Tech Europe 2009

Brilliant image reproduction with KBA-Metronic’s CD-Print

The whole optical storage media industry got together at Media Tech Europe, its annual trade fair, held in Frankfurt from 22 to 24 April. As the sole supplier of offset printing systems, KBA-Metronic displayed its CD-Print, which could be viewed in operation at the attractive exhibition stand. Its freshly printed images were appraised by numerous visitors from the optical media industry and there were many opportunities for KBA-Metronic's specialists on waterless offset short inking technology to hold discussions on future projects. Even if the industry is currently stuck in a consolidation phase, during which DVD volumes are being slashed and the new Blu-Ray format has not yet become a meaningful replacement, "our sales figures give us good grounds for optimism", stated Jens Voelschow, KBA-Metronic Regional Sales Manager. "Discs are printed superbly with our printing systems, CD Print or Premius. No digital printing system offers this photorealistic quality. Above all, the short setup times and an output of 7,200 discs per hour with our Premius speak for themselves. The tried and tested CD-Print with its new flatbed screen printing unit for white primer coating is the ideal machine for medium-sized enterprises. It offers the professional high efficiency and the newcomer a technology that is easy to control", added Mr. Voelschow.

The waterless Anilox short inking unit processes UV inks and ensures a consistent application of ink.
Users of the CD-Print system around the world are already reaping the benefits: Short setup times (changeover for a new job on all units takes no more than 10 minutes), less paper waste - even when only a few discs are printed on - ease of operation, an output of 6,000 discs per hour, and the chance to print up to 6 offset colours, white primer and coating enhancement. Uniform print quality from the first to the last disc, high cost-effectiveness, even with very small print runs, and the attribute "Made in Germany" also characterise the CD-Print. Because the CD Print uses UV technology, combined with a high-performance drying system, the discs can flow into downstream operations immediately after printing to avoid any unwanted idle time.

The KBA-Metronic Premius is designed to meet the customer's highest process requirements. It scores points because of its unique, automatic printing plate changers, and a throughput of up to 7,200 discs per hour. Every printing unit has its own UV dryer, so that each ink is applied "wet on dry". Disk buffers are provided to maintain uninterrupted operation - even during spindle replacement. Quality control features such as code readers and image control systems are also available. An optional RSI (read-side inspection) system meets all the demands of qualified Blu-ray production.

The Premius from KBA-Metronic, with job changeover times of only 5 minutes, processes up to 7,200 discs per hour with double shuttles.
Both CD-Print and Premius are equipped with the waterless Anilox short inking units that are also successfully used in other KBA-Metronic printing systems. This efficient four-cylinder print unit design ensures ease of operation, reliability, and availability, combined with very low maintenance costs. Short inking units are especially suitable for repeat orders, which nowadays arise more and more often. The Anilox screen roller always transports the correct amount of ink onto the silicone-coated, waterless printing plates. Over or under-inking is no longer possible. The printing process is stabilized by controlling the temperature of the Anilox roller and the plate cylinder.
KBA-Metronic, based in Veitshöchheim, Germany, has a widespread network of dealers and offers a worldwide service for its printing systems.
