Print & Sign 2009
Waterless UV printing machine Genius 52UV thrills Romanian trade visitors
Between 30 September and 1 October 2009, the annual Print & Sign 2009 took place on the grounds of the Romexpo Exhibition Centre – a path-breaking trade fair for the Romanian printing, packaging and marking industry. For the first time, KBA-Metronic exhibited together with its distribution partner for Romania, Prosystem Print Utilaje Tipogarfice Srl, the innovative and award-winning waterless UV printing machine Genius 52UV. The interest shown in the skilfully displayed sheet-fed printing machine for special 36 x 52 cm substrates was satisfactory and encouraging. The waterless offset machine with UV drying, which allows the very efficient printing of plastics, foils and paper with sealed surfaces, demonstrated to the visitors all of its capability during the four well-attended days at the trade fair.
The Genius 52UV aroused the interest of the Romanian trade visitors especially because of its waterless and keyless inking unit. Compared to the so-called “long” inking unit of conventional offset printing machines, it operates with four rollers or cylinders of equal size: Screen or Anilox roller, ink transfer roller, plate cylinder, blanket cylinder. Trade visitors were looking for ink keys, but couldn’t find them. Silicone-coated printing plates take care of the clean separation between printing and non-printing spots. Thanks to this unique inking unit technology, the machine is extremely fast in achieving a realistic and brilliant printing result (ten sheets). This really lowers the costs for material especially in case of high-quality and expensive printing substrates.
It was also the futuristic design of the Genius 52UV that drew the attention of the trade visitors at the Print & Sign. One printer asked suspiciously: “I don’t see any printing tower! Where do you house the five printing units?“ In fact, the short inking units of the Genius 52UV are grouped in a satellite configuration around a counter pressure cylinder four times as large. This makes the machine not only very compact (12 m² footprint) but guides the printing sheet in just one gripper bite and true to register through all printing units. This ensures a very high register accuracy which is, for example, required in case of lenticular printing (3 D pictures). A temperature control of the printing unit ensures a high process reliability at all times. Thanks to the uniform inking via a screen roller, which is influenced neither by an ink key nor by water, it is possible to repeat printing jobs with the same inking at any time. The desirable offset printing standard is quickly realised by the Genius 52UV and makes the entire printing process much easier.
In live presentations at the Print & Sign, different materials made of plastic and paper were shown. For example, PVC sheets with a thickness of 0.8 mm. There is hardly any other printing machine in its format class that is capable of processing such substrate thicknesses. This makes the machine especially suitable for the printing of ISO standard plastic cards that can be efficiently printed with 24 up per sheet. The Genius 52UV also impressed with its short job changeover times of less than seven minutes for a complete change of plates and with the drying process of the ink by a powerful UV dryer that takes place right after the printing. Therefore, there are no waiting times during the production and the printing sheet can be immediately printed on the backside or further processed.
When measured by the stream of visitors and requests, the Genius 52UV was one of the highlights at the Print & Sign. To cite the KBA-Metronic area sales director for Romania, Martina Mejzlikova: “We have established very interesting contacts and are conducting concrete negotiations with companies right here in Romania. I am convinced that Romania’s printing industry is on the right path and that there will be a lot going on in the future.
We are happy to work with a strong partner such as Prosystem Print in a trustful co-operation. This gives us the chance to successfully use the interesting waterless short inking technology that characterises all of KBA-Metronic’s printing systems here as well. Now that the country has joined the European Union in 2007, the market is ready for a new printing technology.”
